    Iceland: Auroras, Ice and Fire

    Duration7 Days
    CountryIceland

Iceland's volcanic south, under the low light of the Arctic winter: the lava fields of Reykjanes, the Golden Circle and the black sands of Vík. Seven days from a single Reykjavík base pair the island's great sights with geothermal bathing, an immersive lava show and a private night hunt for the aurora borealis.

    Day by Day

    1

    Day 1

    Keflavík Arrival & Reykjavík Evening

A warm welcome at Keflavík International Airport opens the programme, and a private coach carries the group toward Reykjavík, the world's northernmost capital. After settling into the hotel, the afternoon stays free to adjust to the Arctic rhythm. Darkness falls early in January, and the lit streets of the picturesque city centre invite a first unhurried walk before dinner. Overnight in Reykjavík.

    2

    Day 2

    Thingvellir, Geysir & Gullfoss

After breakfast the private coach heads inland along the country's most famous route. At Thingvellir National Park the group walks between two continents, where the North American and Eurasian plates pull apart. The geothermal field at Geysir follows, with Strokkur firing its column of boiling water on cue, and the afternoon ends at Gullfoss, the Golden Falls, in January a roaring wall of ice and water. Evening back in Reykjavík.

    3

    Day 3

    South Coast & Reynisfjara Beach

An early start makes the most of the five or six hours of Arctic daylight, with the first stretch driven as dawn breaks. The winter landscapes of southern Iceland bring the group to Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss, snow-framed sculptures of falling water, then to the village of Vík and the black sand of Reynisfjara, backed by basalt columns and North Atlantic surf. The coach returns to Reykjavík under skies made for aurora watching.

    4

    Day 4

    Reykjavík Thermal Waters & Lava

A day given to Nordic wellbeing. The morning belongs to a spectacular thermal lagoon set against the ocean, where warm water and a seven-step ritual answer the winter cold. Afterwards the group feels the raw force of the planet at an immersive molten lava show, unique in the world, with real heat radiating a few metres away. The afternoon stays free for Reykjavík's excellent food scene.

    5

    Day 5

    Reykjavík at Leisure & Auroras

The day belongs entirely to the capital: shopping streets, the landmark church of Hallgrímskirkja rising above the rooftops, or an optional outing such as winter whale watching or a glacier walk. When night falls and conditions allow, the private coach carries the group well beyond the city's light pollution for the hunt: the elusive aurora borealis dancing across a star-filled sky. Overnight in Reykjavík.

    6

    Day 6

    Reykjanes Peninsula Geopark

The last full day runs out to the Reykjanes Peninsula, a UNESCO Global Geopark on the island's south-western edge. Snow-covered lava fields stretch to the horizon, mud pools boil and steam at the surface, and dramatic cliffs drop straight into the ocean. The group returns to Reykjavík in the late afternoon, leaving the evening open for a farewell dinner of the group's choosing in the capital.

    7

    Day 7

    Reykjavík & Keflavík Farewell

At the agreed hour the private coach makes the final run across the lava fields to Keflavík, closing a week of ice, fire and long blue winter light. Memories of frozen waterfalls, black beaches, steaming ground and northern skies travel home with the group, along with an open invitation to return to the island in another season.
