    Rome & Assisi Pilgrimage

    Duration8 Days
    CountryItaly

Not every journey to Rome is a pilgrimage, but this one is built as one: the tomb of Saint Peter, the four papal basilicas, the catacombs of the Appian Way and, when it is held, the Wednesday audience with the Pope. The Eucharistic relic of Orvieto leads on to Assisi, where your group spends three nights with Saint Francis and Saint Clare and gathers for Mass.

    Day by Day

    1

    Day 1

    Arrival in the Eternal City

Your group lands at Rome Fiumicino Airport, where a BRACAP representative is waiting for the private transfer into the city. After check-in, an evening walk leads through the lanes of the centre to Piazza Navona and the Pantheon, once a Roman temple and a church for fourteen centuries. A welcome dinner opens a week of pilgrimage. Overnight in Rome.

    2

    Day 2

The Vatican & the Tomb of Peter

Breakfast, then a licensed guide leads the group through the Vatican Museums, from the Raphael Rooms to the Sistine Chapel beneath Michelangelo's ceiling. The visit continues into St Peter's Basilica, built over the tomb of the apostle, with Michelangelo's Pietà near the entrance and the Grottoes where the popes are buried. The afternoon is free for prayer or rest. Overnight in Rome.

    3

    Day 3

The Papal Basilicas & Holy Stairs

After breakfast the guide leads the group to St John Lateran, the cathedral of Rome, and across the square to the Holy Stairs, which pilgrims climb on their knees. The day continues at St Mary Major, the great Marian basilica on the Esquiline, and ends at St Paul Outside the Walls, where the apostle's tomb lies beneath the altar. Overnight in Rome.

    4

    Day 4

    Papal Audience & the Catacombs

Breakfast, then the group takes its places in St Peter's Square for the Wednesday general audience, when the Pope is in Rome. In the afternoon the coach follows the Appian Way, the old Roman road lined with tombs, to one of the Christian catacombs, where a guided visit descends into the underground galleries of the first centuries. Overnight in Rome.

    5

    Day 5

Orvieto on the Way to Assisi

Breakfast and check-out, then north into Umbria to Orvieto, raised on its cliff of volcanic rock. In the cathedral, behind its golden facade, the Chapel of the Corporal keeps the relic linked to the Eucharistic miracle of Bolsena. After lunch in the town, the road continues through the Umbrian hills to Assisi, reached in the late afternoon. Overnight in Assisi.

    6

    Day 6

    Assisi, City of Saint Francis

Breakfast, then a licensed guide leads the group through the Basilica of Saint Francis, from the frescoes of the upper church to the crypt where the saint is buried. Mass for the group follows in the basilica complex. In the afternoon the walk crosses the town to the Basilica of Saint Clare, which keeps the crucifix of San Damiano. Overnight in Assisi.

    7

    Day 7

San Damiano, the Carceri & Porziuncola

After breakfast the group walks down through olive groves to San Damiano, where Francis heard his calling, then the coach climbs Mount Subasio to the Eremo delle Carceri, the hermitage in the woods. In the afternoon the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli reveals the Porziuncola, the small chapel where the Franciscan order began. A farewell dinner follows. Overnight in Assisi.

    8

    Day 8

    Farewell to Umbria

Breakfast, then a last moment in the Piazza del Comune or a quiet visit to one of Assisi's churches before departure. At the agreed hour a private transfer takes the group back to Rome Fiumicino Airport, or to Perugia Airport where flights allow, closing a pilgrimage from the tomb of Peter to that of Francis. End of our services.
