Basque Country & La Rioja Wine Route
Between Bilbao's titanium Guggenheim and the vineyard hills of Rioja Alavesa, northern Spain concentrates its finest into one compact 7-day route — pintxos bars along the Basque coast, medieval hilltop villages and centuries-old cellars. Two of Europe's great food-and-wine regions, brought together in a single week.
Day by Day
Day 1
Arrival in Bilbao
Your group arrives at Bilbao airport, where your BRACAP Tour Manager is waiting for the short transfer into the city. After check-in at your centrally located 4★ hotel, the afternoon is free along the Nervión river, where the old town's Siete Calles meet strikingly modern architecture. In the evening everyone gathers for a welcome group dinner of Basque classics. Overnight in Bilbao.
Day 2
Bilbao & the Guggenheim
The morning belongs to the Guggenheim Museum, Frank Gehry's titanium landmark that redefined Bilbao — a guided visit covers its architecture and headline exhibitions. After lunch by the river, a walking tour crosses the Casco Viejo, pausing at the Ribera market and the arcaded Plaza Nueva, where the evening pintxos ritual begins early. Overnight in Bilbao.
Day 3
The Basque Coast to San Sebastián
Leaving Bilbao, the coach follows the green Basque coast to Getaria, a fishing village that raised both Juan Sebastián Elcano and Cristóbal Balenciaga. At a family txakoli winery above the harbour, the group tastes the region's crisp white wine poured from height. After lunch in the village and a stop in elegant Zarautz, the day ends in San Sebastián. Overnight there.
Day 4
San Sebastián & La Concha
A gentle morning walk follows the crescent of La Concha, one of Europe's most beautiful urban beaches, from the city hall to the wind combs of Peine del Viento. The evening is the highlight: a guided pintxos tour through the Parte Vieja, hopping between counters stacked with miniature Basque cooking. Overnight in San Sebastián.
Day 5
Into Rioja Alavesa Wine Country
The road turns inland through the Cantabrian foothills into Rioja Alavesa, where vines stripe the land beneath the Sierra de Cantabria. In the walled hilltop village of Laguardia, a guided walk threads lanes built over centuries-old cellars. The afternoon's winery visit ends with a tasting of Rioja reds among the barrels. Overnight at a hotel among the vineyards.
Day 6
Vitoria-Gasteiz & Its Medieval Almond
Breakfast among the vines, then a short drive to Vitoria-Gasteiz, the Basque capital and one of Spain's greenest cities. A guided walk traces the almond-shaped medieval quarter, ring after ring of streets around the hilltop cathedral of Santa María. The afternoon is free for the city's celebrated pintxos bars before a farewell group dinner. Overnight in Vitoria.
Day 7
Farewell to the Basque Country
After a final Basque breakfast there is time for a last stroll through Vitoria's old quarter before your BRACAP Tour Manager coordinates the transfer to Bilbao airport. Seven days of titanium museums, fishing harbours, txakoli poured from height and Rioja aged underground travel home with your group. End of our services.
