Iberian Jewels — Spain & Portugal in Style

    Duration14 Days
    CountrySpain, Portugal

Your group crosses the Iberian Peninsula over 14 days — Madrid, Seville's Mudéjar palaces, the Algarve, Lisbon, Coimbra, Porto and the pilgrim city of Santiago de Compostela — combining high-speed AVE trains with a private coach for the one leg the rail network cannot cover directly. A local tour leader accompanies the group throughout, with guided visits led by official historians in every major city.

    Day by Day

    1

    Day 1

    Madrid Welcome & Gran Vía

Your group lands at Madrid-Barajas, where our team handles the meet and greet in the arrivals hall before the private transfer into the city. The rest of the day stays open for rest after the long journey, or for a first walk along the animated Gran Vía and out to Puerta del Sol. Overnight in Madrid.

    2

    Day 2

    Cibeles, Alcalá & the Retiro

After breakfast an official guide leads a panoramic tour of the Spanish capital, taking in the Cibeles fountain, the Puerta de Alcalá, the stately Paseo del Prado and the Retiro park, the city's green lung. The afternoon is free, with the option of a walking tour through the Madrid of the Habsburgs, Plaza Mayor and the Royal Palace. Overnight in Madrid.

    3

    Day 3

    High-Speed South to Seville

Breakfast and check-out, then a transfer to Atocha station for the high-speed train to Seville. The run takes a little over two and a half hours, crossing Castile and the Despeñaperros pass and sparing your group a long day on the road. On arrival, a free afternoon among the flowered lanes of the Barrio de Santa Cruz, the old Jewish quarter. Overnight in Seville.

    4

    Day 4

    Mudéjar Seville & the Giralda

After breakfast, a guided visit to the Andalusian capital. Your group walks through Seville Cathedral, the largest Gothic cathedral in the world, and climbs to its famous tower, the Giralda, before entering the Real Alcázar, a fortified palace where Mudéjar art comes alive. The afternoon is free, with an optional evening of pure flamenco in a historic tablao. Overnight in Seville.

    5

    Day 5

    Seville at Your Own Pace

Breakfast at the hotel, and the day belongs to your group, with Seville's terraces, patios and riverside there to be taken slowly. Those who prefer a full excursion can cross the Roman Bridge into Córdoba, wander the whitewashed lanes of the Judería and step inside the Mezquita-Catedral with a local official guide and priority entry. Overnight in Seville.

    6

    Day 6

    Across the Guadiana to Lisbon

Breakfast, then departure by private coach towards Portugal. Your group crosses the Guadiana into the Portuguese Algarve and stops in Faro, where the walled historic centre and the views over the sea make an easy morning break, with free time for lunch. The road then continues to Lisbon, the city of seven hills. Overnight in Lisbon.

    7

    Day 7

    Belém, the Tagus & Alfama

After breakfast, a panoramic tour of the Portuguese capital. Your group sees Belém, the quarter from which the great discoverers set sail, the iconic Belém Tower and the Jerónimos Monastery, then climbs into Alfama for its panoramic views over the Tagus. The afternoon is free, with an optional dinner accompanied by live fado in the evening. Overnight in Lisbon.

    8

    Day 8

    Lisbon Free Day & Sintra

Breakfast, and a free day in Lisbon for your group to follow its own rhythm. An optional private excursion runs west to Sintra and the Palácio da Pena, whose vivid colours and fantasy architecture have made it a symbol of Portugal, then down the Atlantic coast to Cascais and elegant Estoril before returning to the capital. Overnight in Lisbon.

    9

    Day 9

    Coimbra Libraries & the Douro

Breakfast and departure for Coimbra, the former Portuguese capital, famous for a university that ranks among the oldest in Europe. Your group makes an exclusive visit to its architectural jewel, the Joanina Library, one of the most beautiful in the world. The route then heads north to Porto, the city that wraps around the river Douro. Overnight in Porto.

    10

    Day 10

    Ribeira Colours & Port Cellars

After breakfast, a guided walk through Porto's historic centre and the picturesque Ribeira, with its coloured houses facing the water. Your group crosses the Dom Luís I bridge to one of the legendary cellars of Vila Nova de Gaia, where a guided tasting among century-old barrels reveals the secrets of port wine. Free afternoon on Rua de Santa Catarina. Overnight in Porto.

    11

    Day 11

    Galicia & the Obradoiro

Breakfast, then the return into Spain through Galicia. Your group reaches Santiago de Compostela, the goal of generations of pilgrims, for a guided visit to the Praza do Obradoiro and the imposing Cathedral of Santiago, a masterpiece of Romanesque and Baroque art. The rest of the day stays free in the old town. Overnight in Santiago de Compostela.

    12

    Day 12

Back to the Capital by Rail

Breakfast and transfer to the station for the fast train back to Madrid. Our team meets your group on arrival at the station and handles the transfer to the hotel. The afternoon is free for last-minute shopping along the Milla de Oro or in the city's large department stores. Overnight in Madrid.

    13

    Day 13

Madrid Free Day & Farewell Dinner

Breakfast, and a free day in Madrid. Those who want one more Castilian city can take the optional excursion to Toledo, walking its medieval streets to the Primada Cathedral and the Santa María la Blanca Synagogue. In the evening, your group gathers for a farewell dinner in a traditional restaurant to close this Iberian crossing. Overnight in Madrid.

    14

    Day 14

    Last Breakfast & Barajas Transfer

After breakfast, free time at the hotel until the appointed hour, when a private transfer takes your group to Madrid-Barajas airport for the journey home.
