    Sarria to Santiago on Foot

    Duration9 Days
    CountrySpain

Walking the final stages of the Camino Francés, from Sarria to the square of the Obradoiro, earns your group the Compostela: six days on foot through Galician hamlets, oak woods and medieval bridges, with every stage walked and the luggage carried ahead. Santiago then gives a full day to the cathedral, the tomb of Saint James and the Pilgrims' Mass.

    Day by Day

    1

    Day 1

    Arrival & Transfer to Sarria

Your group lands at Santiago de Compostela Airport, where a BRACAP representative is waiting for the private transfer east to Sarria, the town where the last hundred kilometres of the Camino Francés begin. After check-in the walking guide hands out the pilgrim credentials, and an evening walk up the old town's Rúa Maior earns the first stamp. Dinner follows. Overnight in Sarria.

    2

    Day 2

    Sarria to Portomarín

After breakfast the group sets out on foot through oak woods and farming hamlets, past the Romanesque church of Barbadelo and the waymark that counts down the last hundred kilometres. The day ends with the descent to the Miño and the bridge over the reservoir into Portomarín, whose church was moved stone by stone when the valley was flooded. Overnight in Portomarín.

    3

    Day 3

    Portomarín to Palas de Rei

Breakfast, then the longest stage climbs out of the Miño valley toward the Sierra de Ligonde, through Gonzar and Castromaior, where the outline of an Iron Age hillfort crowns the hill. The path continues past the stone cross of Lameiros, one of the finest on the Way, before reaching the small town of Palas de Rei, where the group settles in for the evening. Overnight in Palas de Rei.

    4

    Day 4

    Palas de Rei to Melide

After breakfast a shorter stage crosses from the province of Lugo into A Coruña, through hamlets and stands of oak and chestnut. At Furelos the group crosses a medieval bridge into the village before the last stretch to Melide, where the afternoon is free for the town's famous octopus houses and a rest before the second half of the walk. Overnight in Melide.

    5

    Day 5

    Melide to Arzúa

Breakfast, then the path runs through eucalyptus woods and small river valleys, fording streams on stepping stones and crossing into Ribadiso, where a medieval bridge leads to an old pilgrim hospital restored as a hostel. By early afternoon the group reaches Arzúa, a dairy town known for its soft cheese, with time to rest. Overnight in Arzúa.

    6

    Day 6

    Arzúa to O Pedrouzo

After breakfast a gentle stage follows forest tracks and quiet lanes past hamlets and the granite granaries of the Galician countryside. Along the way, small chapels and wayside cafés keep the pilgrim stamps coming, two a day as the Compostela requires. The group arrives in O Pedrouzo in the early afternoon, ready for the final day. Overnight in O Pedrouzo.

    7

    Day 7

    O Pedrouzo to Santiago

Breakfast, then the last stage passes the airport's edge and climbs to Monte do Gozo, where the spires of the cathedral appear for the first time. The walk descends through the city to the Obradoiro square and its baroque facade. At the Pilgrim's Office each walker presents the credential and receives the Compostela. Overnight in Santiago de Compostela.

    8

    Day 8

    Santiago, Cathedral & Pilgrims' Mass

Breakfast, then a local guide leads the group through the cathedral: the Portico of Glory, the crypt with the tomb of Saint James and, in a Holy Year, the Holy Door. The group attends the Pilgrims' Mass, then walks the cathedral rooftops above the Obradoiro. A farewell dinner in the old town closes the pilgrimage. Overnight in Santiago de Compostela.

    9

    Day 9

    Farewell from Santiago

Breakfast, then free time until the agreed hour for a last walk under the arcades of the Rúa do Vilar or a visit to the Mercado de Abastos. A private transfer then takes the group to Santiago de Compostela Airport, closing a week that turned the last stretch of the Camino into a shared arrival. End of our services.
