    Normandy Beaches to Flanders Fields

    Duration6 Days
    CountryFrance, Belgium

“In Flanders fields the poppies blow”: John McCrae's line marks the final stop of a journey that links the two world wars in six days. Your group starts with the D-Day beaches, Pegasus Bridge and the Caen Memorial, then follows a licensed battlefield guide across the Somme, Vimy Ridge and the Ypres Salient to the Last Post under the Menin Gate.

    Day by Day

    1

    Day 1

Paris to Caen & the Memorial

Your group arrives at Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport, where a BRACAP representative is waiting for the private coach west to Normandy. In the afternoon the Caen Memorial sets the scene, tracing the road from the 1930s through the Battle of Normandy to the Cold War. After check-in, a welcome dinner opens a journey through two world wars. Overnight in Caen.

    2

    Day 2

    The D-Day Landing Beaches

Breakfast, then a full day on the Normandy coast with a licensed battlefield guide. The Juno Beach Centre recalls the Canadian landing, the remains of the Mulberry harbour lie off Arromanches, and the afternoon leads to Omaha Beach, the American Cemetery at Colleville and the cliffs of Pointe du Hoc. Overnight in Caen.

    3

    Day 3

    Pegasus Bridge, Amiens & Arras

After breakfast the day begins at Pegasus Bridge, first objective of the airborne landings on the night of 5–6 June 1944. The coach then heads north-east to Amiens for lunch below its Gothic cathedral, and continues to Arras, where the Wellington Quarry takes the group underground into tunnels dug by New Zealand miners before the offensive of April 1917. Overnight in Arras.

    4

    Day 4

    The Somme & Vimy Ridge

Breakfast, then south to the Somme battlefields of 1916 with the battlefield guide: the Newfoundland Memorial Park at Beaumont-Hamel with its preserved trenches, the Lochnagar mine crater and the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing. The afternoon climbs Vimy Ridge to the Canadian National Memorial and its restored tunnels, before the short drive back to the arcaded squares of Arras. Overnight in Arras.

    5

    Day 5

Ypres Salient & the Menin Gate

After breakfast the coach crosses into Belgian Flanders to Ypres, where the In Flanders Fields Museum in the Cloth Hall opens a day in the Salient. The guide leads on to Essex Farm, where John McCrae wrote his famous poem, and to Tyne Cot, the largest Commonwealth war cemetery in the world. In the evening the group attends the Last Post ceremony under the Menin Gate. Overnight in Ypres.

    6

    Day 6

    Farewell to Flanders

Breakfast, then a last look at the Market Square and its restored Gothic belfry before the coach heads east across the rolling Flemish countryside that witnessed four years of war. At the agreed hour the transfer reaches Brussels Airport, or Lille station for groups continuing by rail. End of our services.
